Hollyhock Offspring
A volunteer plant came up in front of my sister’s double hollyhock. It’s beautiful! The plant produces the same type of seedpods and looks like a miniature version of hollyhocks.
The offspring of hybrids are always full of surprises. They may be identical to the parent plant or vary in size, color or petal count. Propagators use this to develop new and better varieties for the home garden. One such find is Queeny Purple a 2004 All-America Selections Winner. This beauty has a purple powder puff-like flower and grows only 20 to 30 inches tall. Looks like your sister ended up with a winner of her own.
