Holly Has No Flowers or Fruit

I have a 7-year-old male and female holly bushes planted next to each other that always have white flowers and red berries in the fall. This year, there were no blooms or berries. What do you think happened?

Cold winter temperatures, a late spring frost or over fertilization can interfere with bloom. We can't change the weather but we can make sure our plants are healthy and better able to withstand the cold. Make sure the plants receive sufficient water throughout the year. Water all evergreens and new plantings thoroughly in fall before the ground freezes. Monitor soil moisture throughout the spring and water as needed. Mulch the soil to conserve moisture, improve plant health and reduce your work load. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizers that can encourage leaf growth and discourage flowering.
