Globe Gilia

To spice up our backyard, we planted a wildflower seed mix in our garden. This group of purple flowers, we think they are called Queen Anne’s Thimbles came up in the mix. 

Your mystery plant is Globe Gilia also known as Blue or Queen Anne's Thimbles.  You can find additional information by looking under its botanical name Gilia capitata.  This beauty tolerates hot and dry conditions just like its native habitat of western North America.  A relative of phlox it blooms from June through October and works well in native gardens like yours, informal plantings and water wise gardens.  This annual will reseed when grown in natural plantings or perennial gardens where the soil is not disturbed.  This allows the seedlings to sprout and develop into mature flowering plants for your garden.
