Fall Care of Amaryllis and Christmas Cactus

I live in zone 5 and was wondering if I can keep my amaryllis bulb and Christmas cactus in the garage until December?

Depending on the weather an unheated garages is usually too cold in late fall and winter for both Christmas cactus and amaryllis. Get your cactus to bloom by growing them in a sunny window during the day and complete darkness at night. Keep the soil slightly dry and locate the plants in a cool room in your house. You should be rewarded with flowers. As for the amaryllis, you have several options. I grow mine like houseplants year round. They are outside for the summer and kept a bit dry in a cool location in the fall. I am rewarded with flowers once or twice a year. Other gardeners move their bulbs to a cool dark location in the fall. They repot the bulbs and start watering them in January. With some luck you will soon be rewarded with flowering stems to brighten your indoor winter garden.
