Early Expanding Buds on Trees and Shrubs

The buds on many of my trees and shrubs have started to swell earlier than normal this spring. I am worried that a cold snap will kill these plants. Will these plants grow and bloom this year?

Expanding buds are very sensitive to cold temperatures. The amount of damage depends on the temperature extremes and stage of bud development. Expanding flower buds (swollen and showing color) may be killed resulting in loss of flowers for this season. Damaged leaf buds may result in tattered or undeveloped leaves. Fortunately healthy trees are able to produce a second flush of growth when this happens. There is nothing we can do now to prevent damage. Proper care throughout the growing season will help to keep plants healthy and reduce the negative impact from weather and pest damage.
