Dividing Asparagus

Is there a good way to divide asparagus or do I need to buy new plants?

You can dig and divide asparagus in early spring as the spears appear. You will have to dig deep to get all the roots. Remember those deep (at least one foot) trenches you dug for planting? I have moved one asparagus bed in my life and decided the next time it will be easier to just buy new plants. Plus the newer cultivars like Jersey Giant produce larger yet tender stems on more disease resistant plants.
