Direct Sowing in the Garden

Many annuals are easily started from seed, but some should be direct seeded outdoors rather than started indoors.  Why is this?

Many seeds are started indoors to get a jump on the growing season.  These plants may take longer to grow and flower than a short season would allow.  Others may be very small or require special treatment that makes starting the seeds indoors a more reliable option.  Shorter season plants or those that can tolerate or require outdoor conditions can be started directly in the garden.  Many gardeners find this much easier than investing time, energy, and space needed for starting the seeds indoors.
