Deformed and Bitter Carrots

Why did my carrots all grow deformed and bitter-tasting? I’ve heard the soil may need copper—true? If so, when and how should I add it?

Heavy clay and rocky soils interfere with root development resulting in deformed carrots. Add organic matter to improve drainage or create a raised bed filled with well-drained soil for better results. Once the carrots have sprouted be sure to thin the seedlings so the roots have enough space to grow to full size. Or try growing half longs that are better suited to less than ideal soil conditions. Keep the soil moist but not wet for the best flavor. Then give them a chill. I left a row or two of carrots in the garden for winter storage. I harvested them during a winter thaw and enjoyed the sweetest carrots I had ever grown or tasted.
