Companion Plants for Daylilies

I’m an Indianapolis gardener. Can you suggest some bright companion plantings for daylilies? I’d like to provide color while the daylilies aren’t blooming without overpowering the plants’ graceful foliage.

Start by mixing daffodils with the daylilies. The declining daffodil foliage will be masked by the graceful leaves of the emerging daylilies. Create a light airy backdrop of Russian Sage (Perovskia atriplicifolia) for the daylilies. This tall plant with silvery foliage and blue flowers is a nice contrast to the strappy leaves of the daylily. The gray-green foliage and blue flowers of the more tame catmints (Nepeta) also make nice planting partners. Try Six-Hills Giant or Walkers Low varieties that won't take over your garden. Or try a bold partner such as purple coneflower, Rudbeckia, bee balm or Heliopsis. These also contrast nicely but won't overpower the daylilies.
