Coffee Grounds and Egg Shells in the Garden

When I was young, we had a neighbor that would spread used coffee grounds & egg shells into their vegetable garden and I am wondering what benefit this would have been to the plants.  Would it be good for flower gardens as well?

Coffee grounds are a form of organic matter.  Regular additions of organic matter help improve the drainage in heavy clay soils and water holding ability in sandy soils.  Even the used paper filters can be added to the compost pile or dug into the garden.   Egg shells are a source of phosphorous and organic material.  They, however, take a long time to break down and benefit the soil.  Always rinse them thoroughly before adding to the soil.  Egg residue can attract rodents to the garden.  You may want to crush and recycle the shells in your compost pile and sprinkle the more attractive coffee grounds on the soil of vegetables, flowers and other plantings.
