Coaxing Your Bougainvillea to Bloom

What’s the secret to coaxing bougainvillea to unfurl its bright summer colors? Mine is large and healthy looking after spending the winter indoors, but so far, no color.

Proper care year-round is the secret to successful flowering. Grow plants in a warm sunny place for the summer. You may want to move it outdoors on your porch, patio or deck. Keep the soil slightly moist and fertilize with a dilute solution of any flowering plant fertilizer. Move your plant to a cooler yet bright location indoors for the winter in zones 8 and colder. Allow the soil to dry slightly between watering. Prune large plants back in spring to shape and keep to a manageable size. Repot root-bound plants at this time as well. Don’t be overanxious to transplant. These plants flower best when slightly pot bound.
