Caring for Orchid Cactus
My sister-in-law has a collection on cacti in her home. On a recent visit she'd given me one called an orchid cactus. I've never claimed to have a green thumb. How do I take care of my gift?
The orchid cactus belongs to a large group of cactus known as Epiphyllum. This group contains many members that produce red, purple, white or yellow often fragrant flowers, in spring or summer. Grow these in a bright location allowing the soil to dry slightly between watering. Keep the plant a little drier during its rest period and slightly moister when in bloom. Rest the plant in winter by moving it to a cooler location of 50 degrees. Cool temperatures and drier soil during the rest period will encourage bloom. Move the plant to a warmer location when it is flowering or actively growing.
