Caring for Brazilian Plume

We received a Brazilian Plume in a 6-inch pot several years ago. How should we care for it?

A relative of the more common shrimp plant your Brazilian Plume (Justicia carnea) was a popular plant with seasoned gardeners.  Though it is hardy outdoors in zones 8B through 11, more gardeners may know it as a flowering houseplant.  It was quite popular in the past because it is one of the few plants that can bloom several times a year in the less-than-ideal conditions in our homes.  Grow it in a bright location or under artificial lights.  Water often enough to keep the soil moist.  Droughty conditions result in leaf drop, poor flowering and even death of the plant.  The Brazilian Plume likes warm summer temperatures and can be moved outdoors for the summer.  Keep things a bit cooler, 65 degrees, in the winter.  Trim back overgrown plants in spring.  Use the trimmings to start new plants to share with family and friends.  You may help return this plant's popularity - at least in your circle of friends.
