Birch with Yellow Leaves

My White Birch tree's leaves are more yellowish in color than green. Also some of the branches at the ends do not have leaves.

Yellow leaves, bare branches and general decline are signs of bronze birch borer. This insect feeds under the tree bark preventing water and nutrients from moving between they roots and leaves. White birches grown in landscapes are susceptible to this pest. These trees prefer the cool moist woodland soils of the northern United States. Growing these trees in the middle of the lawn is like moving a woodland tree to a prairie. Improve the environment to reduce the stress and reduce the problem with borers. Start by mulching the tree. A 2 to 3 inch layer of wood chips on the soil surface surrounding the tree will help keep the roots cool and moist. Or plant perennial groundcovers or low growing shrubs under the canopy. Keep the soil moist, not wet, throughout the growing season. Water the whole area under the canopy thoroughly during dry weather. A fall application of the soil systemic imadacloprid has been effective at managing this pest. Be sure to read and follow all label directions carefully whenever using this or other products.
