Vines Selection, Planting and Care
Bougainvillea
What’s the secret to coaxing bougainvillea to unfurl its bright summer colors? Mine is large and healthy looking after spending the winter indoors, but so far, no color.
Carrion Flower
I found these blue berries on a plant
near the edge of the woods near my home. The cluster of berries were about the
size of an orange and started about 18 inches above the ground. Any idea
what they could be?
Clematis
I need to put my
clematis on a larger trellis. The one I have now is too small to
support the plant. I live in zone 5 and don't know quite how to go about
doing it.
Clematis
Should I have cut my clematis back in the fall, prune it now or in the spring or just leave it alone?Clematis
I
have a very large clematis. It
seems to bloom earlier than all my neighbors' plants. Is this because I do not prune it back for the winter?
Clematis
I am selling my house and hate to leave my favorite clematis behind. How can I start a new plant for my home?Climbing Hydrangea
We planted a
climbing hydrangea on the north side of our home. We live in zone 5 and are
wondering if this plant requires any special care for winter.
Climbing Hydrangea
I am growing a climbing
hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala petiolaris)
for the first time. After several
years it finally flowered. Do I
remove these faded flowers? When
and what should I prune on this plant?
Honeysuckle
Do I need to do anything to the Goldflame Honeysuckle? It grew quite a bit last summer & I am wondering do I need to prune it, or will it just keep growing where it left off last year? If I need to shape it or trim it down, when is the best time to do that?Honeysuckle
I have a beautiful honeysuckle vine that I'd like to share with friends and family. Can I start it from a cutting? If so, how do you suggest I do it?Mandevilla
I received a Mandevilla vine for Mother's Day. It is growing outside in a large
container on a chainlink fence. I know
it is not hardy in my area and would like to save it for the winter. But I
don't have room for this big container.
Is this possible?
Moonflower Vine
We have a moonflower vine and would like to start more. We have harvested the seedpods and now would like to start more this spring. Do we plant the whole pod or the seeds inside? What else should we know?Overview of Vines
Vines are useful and attractive additions to any size landscape. They can
be used to reduce heating and cooling costs, soften harsh structural features,
screen or divide areas in the yard, mask unsightly views while adding color and
interest to the landscape.
Overwintering
I grew some beautiful sun coleus and sweet potato vines this summer. How can I keep them over winter?Quick Covering Vine
I'm looking for a perennial that will quickly cover my new
arbor with blooms. Any suggestions of plants for zone 5 that won't keep me
waiting for several seasons?
Sweet Pea
I have a really nice Sweet Pea Vine - it has climbed to the top of the chain-link fence and has many pink & white flowers. How should I take care of it for the winter? Should the vine be taken off the fence?Sweet Pea
I want to know the best way to transplant a sweet pea
plant. The vine is approximately 28 years old.
Trumpet Vine
Do trumpet vines need any special care to make it through our cold zone 4b winters?Wild Cucumber
We discovered a long vine of 30-40 feet long growing around a large evergreen tree in northern Waukesha (WI) county. This vine had prickly seed pods. Needless to say, we are curious of its identity.Wisteria
We
have a wisteria that is 6 years old. It started blooming about 3 years ago with
each year having more blooms than the previous. I know we have it growing on a
trellis too small to hold a more mature plant. Can we move it to another
location without damaging it or is it too late? Also this year there are many
pods on the plant that I have left thru the winter. Are these seed pods and if
so, can I pick them and plant the seeds? Will they eventually break open
themselves?

Wisteria
This
is my second winter for my wisteria & I am not sure what I should do with
it before winter. It grew a lot
this summer & I don't know whether I should let it be & go dormant or
trim it back. What type of mulch
should I use?
Wisteria
Do you know how to propagate wisteria vine? I have some
vermiculite, but I'm not quite sure what to do.

mess and very few flowers?
Wisteria
I planted a wisteria on the south side of my house in full sun. I want it to make an arch over the entrance to my front porch and then wrap around the top of the porch. Will this grow into my siding and soffit and cause problems. If so, what is the best way to control wisteria. I've heard they can be pretty invasive.Wisteria
I
planted a Japanese or Chinese wisteria in a small container and it is growing
well. Will it survive my zone 5
