I purchased a Norfolk Island pine in December to use as a
Christmas tree. Can it be
transplanted outdoors next spring?
What kind of care should I provide?
The Norfolk Island pine is native to Norfolk Island in the
South Pacific and hardy in zones 9 or 10 and 11. Unless you are in one of these warmer zones you will
need to grow your plant in a sunny location indoors. Keep the soil moist but not wet. Norfolk Island Pines do suffer branch dying during the
long dry (low humidity) winters.
Increase the humidity by placing your pine near other plants or on a
gravel tray. Make a gravel tray by
filling a plant saucer with gravel or pebbles and water. The plant sits on the pebbles above the
water. As the water evaporates it
increases the humidity around the plant.
