Bulb Planting

What’s a surefire way to distinguish the top end of a bulb from the bottom? I especially have trouble when planting elephant’s ears.

It would be nice if all bulbs were pointed at the top and flat on the bottom like daffodils and tulips.  But many like the elephant ears (a rhizome) do not have as distinct top and bottom. Fortunately, even bulbs planted upside down will find their way to the surface.  It just wastes energy when they have to take the long way around.  Place canna and elephant ear rhizomes on their side when planting.  Look for the root plate a somewhat flat area with the majority of roots attached on callas and anemones.  Place this side at the bottom of the planting hole.
