Spring Garden Tips

Amaryllis

When I brought my amaryllis inside last October, it bloomed right away instead of waiting until Christmas. It also was much more prolific than usual—unfurling six blossoms. Do you know what caused this behavior?

Pat yourself on the back. Most gardeners struggle to get their amaryllis to bloom just once. I find if I grow my amaryllis year-round (skipping the dormant period) that I often have blossoms in the summer and again in winter. Enjoy the blooms and move your amaryllis to a sunny window for the winter. Water as needed and add a very dilute solution of flowering houseplant fertilizer after the blooms fade. You just may be rewarded with a winter floral display.
