Low Light Houseplants

Add a few houseplants to brighten those low light locations in your home.  Selecting the right plants and providing proper care will reduce work for you and keep your plants looking good.

Pothos, philodendron, snake plant and ZZ (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) plant are a few of the most low light tolerant plants.  Start with these low maintenance choices.

Water plants thoroughly but only when the soil is just slightly moist.  Plants growing in low light will need less water and very little fertilizer.

Try adding a grow light if light is too limited for these plants or you want to grow a wider selection of plants.  Check out the energy efficient spotlights, clip on, and other artificial lights now available to help you keep your plants healthy and beautiful in low light conditions.

Rotate your plants between sunnier and lower light locations throughout your home. Giving low light plants a few weeks in a brighter spot can help keep them healthy and add variety to your interiorscape.

A bit more information:  Try some of these other low light plants.  Saloon or cast iron plant (Aspidistra) is one of the toughest plants around.  Great in low light and tolerant of lots of abuse.  Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema) has variegated foliage and works nicely as a tabletop plant.  Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum) produce beautiful white flowers.  Just be sure to keep the soil slightly moist to avoid drooping plants and leaves with brown edges.
