Tree Peony Shoots

I was given a tree peony 5 years ago that consistently produces beautiful pink flowers. Like most of the other peonies I have in my flower bed, several starts come up from the ground (possibly from the root) every year. Can I transplant these “starts” without damaging the original peony?

Tree peonies are usually grafted onto the roots of an herbaceous peony (Paeonia lactiflora). Shoots arising from these roots would have slightly different leaves and definitely a different flower than your tree peony. Remove these shoots to prevent them from outgrowing and overshadowing your tree peony. You could try rooting the shoots and see what develops.
