Lawn fertilization in the FallStart with a soil test whenever possible. It will tell you how much and what type of fertilizer is needed.

For cool season grasses like bluegrass, fescue, and rye, Apply a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer sometime between late October and Thanksgiving before the ground freezes. Your lawn will get the biggest benefit from late fall fertilization.

Southern lawns require different care. Tall fescue and overseeded Bermuda grass lawns can be fertilized in late fall around Thanksgiving. The last fertilization for most other southern grasses should be around Labor Day.

Help these and all lawn grasses by leaving your clippings on the lawn. Small clippings break down quickly and a year’s worth of clippings can equal up to one fertilization. Better for your budget and better for the environment.

A bit more information: Fall fertilization promotes deep roots and a thicker stand of grass without excessive top growth that needs more frequent mowing. Proper fertilization can help you grow a healthier lawn that is better able to fend off weeds and resist insect and disease attacks.

Rake Away Snow Mold in the Lawn

Rake your way to a healthy lawn. As the snow recedes from the lawn break out the leaf rake and fluff up the grass. This helps reduce the risk of pink and gray snow mold developing and damaging your lawn. These fungal diseases are most common when heavy snow falls or ice covers non-frozen turf or after late winter snow storms. The damage is usually seen where snow lingers late in the season. Symptoms appear as circular areas of matted brown grass. You may even see a gray or pink cobweb-like growth over these areas. A light raking dries the grass, making it less susceptible to these diseases.
