Plant bulbs 2 to 3 times their vertical height deep. Try mixing several bulbs together to double your enjoyment. I like mixing yellow daffodils with blue squills for a rich combination. Or, how about some early blooming crocus mixed with some late blooming tulips.

mgm_audio_94_spring_bulbsExtend your garden’s bloom time and reduce your work load by planting bulbs amongst your perennials. As the bulbs fade the emerging perennial foliage covers the yellowing bulb leaves. Plus, you double your bloom time for each square foot.

Or maybe you prefer to mix in a few pansies. Cold weather pansies like Icicle, Second Season and Sub-zero will make it through even the coldest winters. They look good now and will complement the bulbs when they bloom next spring.

Mix a little slow release or bulb booster fertilizer in the soil above the bulbs. Water and wait for spring.

A bit more information: Start shopping early for the healthiest and best selection of spring flowering bulbs. Store purchased bulbs in a cool dark location until you are ready to plant. Wait for the soil to cool before you start planting. Planting after the average night time temperatures reach and stay at 40 to 50 degrees reduces the risk of fall sprouting.
