Consider purchasing a few fall blooming annuals and perennials to brighten your landscape.

A pot of mums or asters can add color to your front steps. Try mixing them with other fall plants for a bit more interest. Skirt the container with frost tolerant pansies for added color and nectar for the butterflies. Ornamental grasses or Swiss chard can be used for vertical interest. Mix in some lambs ears, with silvery leaves, or coral bells with colorful foliage for added texture and color.

Container gardens for the FallOrnamental cabbage, kale and mustard provide colorful foliage as well. Combine these with mums and asters or other fall blooming annuals. Sweet alyssum, snapdragons, dianthus, lobelia and stocks are a few annuals that help brighten the fall garden.

And, visit your favorite garden center to see if they have potted and blooming sunflowers for your fall garden. Group with other plants, pumpkins and gourds, bales of hay and corn stalks for an attractive display.

A bit more information: Pumpkins and ornamental squash do not need to stay on the front steps with the potted mums. Try moving a few into the garden with ornamental grasses and fall bloomers. Strategically placed, they can brighten a fading garden or fill in voids in planting beds.
