Appleton, Wisconsin - Schmalz Custom Landscaping & Garden Center - Designer: Luke Schmalz - Fairly new construction left a blank slate for a landscape architect's creativity and Luke Schmalz stepped up. This courtyard garden mimics an English cottage garden filled with a lush assortment of native plantings and a narrow winding path of old world cobblestone pavers. The serious challenge was soil amendments since this region was high in clay content. Yards of topsoil were blended with peat, compost and other additions that would ensure a fertile, well draining bed for the new plantings. As you see, the result speaks for itself. - Terri Welisek

Many were surprised at the impact that composting their kitchen scraps had on their trash weight. We provided free Home Composters for each of the participants. One of the great benefits of the Challenge was the involvement of children, grandparents, guests, and neighbors.
