Shade Tolerant Groundcovers |
|

Consider replacing thin sparse grass that’s struggling in the shade with a more suitable groundcover. Try shade tolerant groundcovers like hosta, coral bells (Heuchera), foam flower (Tiarella), Canadian and European ginger (Asarum), barrenwort (Epimedium), deadnettle (Lamium) or other shade tolerant plants hardy to your area. If these don’t flourish you may want to let the moss take over and create a soft bed of green. Or spread a 2 to 3 inch layer of shredded bark or woodchips over the bare soil. Keep the mulch off the trunk of the tree and make the mulch bed as wide as you can tolerate. Mulch will help reduce weeds, conserve moisture, prevent erosion, and improve the soil as it breaks down.
