Mow your way to a healthier and more pest resistant lawn. Cut your grass high and often enough so you remove only 1/3 of the grass blade at each mowing. Grow cool season grasses like blue grass, fescue and rye grass 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches tall. Warm season grasses like Bermuda grass, carpet grass, centipede grass and zoysia should be grown at 1 to 2 inches tall while St. Augustine should a bit higher, 2 to 3 inches, for best results. Tall grass grows deeper roots and is better able to compete with weeds and resist pest problems without pesticides. Consider greening it up a bit more by using a push or electric mower.
