Create or expand mulch beds under your trees. Research has found that grass is a big competitor of young trees. Expand the mulch ring to as large as you can tolerate and watch your tree’s growth rate improve. You’ll also save time spent mowing and trimming the grass around individual trees. Use a two to three inch layer of woodchips, evergreen needles or shredded bark on the soil surface for mulch. Do not pile mulch onto the tree trunk. This can lead to trunk and root rot and creates a great habitat for rodents who like to feed on our landscape plants. |
