Put fall leaves to work in your garden. I attach the bagger to my electric mower to collect and shred my leaves. Or rake and shred fall leaves with a leaf shredder. Shredding speeds decomposition and the subsequent benefits your garden will receive. Spread a two inch layer of leaves over vacant garden spaces in fall. Dig them into the top 6 to 8 inches of soil. These leaf pieces will break down over the dormant season improving drainage of heavy clay soils and water holding capacity of sandy and rocky soil.
